Engineers in AWS work to design resilient, cost effective DC facilities. We are responsible for achieving a world class uptime for our customers and drive to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet AWS’s growing demand. We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make directly to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs. As an Engineer at AWS you will have the opportunity to impact changes in our current design, as well as establish design procedures and protocols for future systems.

AWS Engineering is responsible for the design of all electrical and mechanical systems within all of Amazon DCs world-wide. The team works directly with operations, security teams, field engineering, and construction management to implement designs that are functional, practical and innovative.

We are seeking a proven leader to join our management team as the Engineering Electrical Manager for our European region. Our goal is to find the candidate that is ready to lead and represent Amazon’s design function across the EMEA. If you have experience leading teams, managing direct reports and working within a broad design and construction infrastructure environment, then you could be the right candidate.

As the Design Engineering Manager you will be responsible for the design function for the EMEA Region. Your responsibility will be to staff, develop, and lead your team; develop designs and processes; adhere to schedules and budgets; develop a sourcing plan for equipment and consultants; work with the organization’s leadership team to implement our global strategy; and continuously improve the way your team operates by implementing LEAN principles.
The following will be the typical high level duties:
– Full ownership of the design of the data centers within your assigned region
– All management related leadership and administrative functions (staffing, leadership, expenses, performance management, salaries, goal setting, guidance, training, mentoring, promotions and terminations, and career development).
– Managing change, versioning and configuration control.
– Oversight of design consultancy firms.
– Documentation, release and management of design guides, standards, specifications and procedures.
– Definition and approval of project scopes, request for proposals (RFP) and request for information (RFI).
– Creation and management of key performance indicator metrics (KPI).
– 25% International Travel, sometimes unplanned.

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications and experience:
– Team leadership and management of direct reports.
– Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
– 10+ years of experience in Industrial or Commercial Engineering design, construction or commissioning.
– Critical Data Center electrical equipment knowledge (Generators, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Switchgear, Transformers, Power Feeders).
– Create and release documentation of team assignments, processes, standards and procedures.
– Develop new concepts through exploration, design, testing and into deployment/mass production.
– Define system-level architecture, performance, and equipment requirements, conceptual designs and project documentation.
– Perform and present business case analysis.
– Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.
– Drive Continuous Improvement methodologies, practices, culture and concepts

– Project Management Certificate
– Chartered or Professional Engineer (PE).
– Critical Data Center mechanical equipment knowledge (Chillers, Plumbing, Fire Detection/Suppression, Air Handling Units, Computer Room Air Handling/Conditioning Units, UPS, CRAH, CRAC).
– +5 years of experience in Data Center design and construction.
– Knowledge of local building codes and safety regulations.
– Large infrastructure experience.
– Equipment manufacturing experience.
– Vendor management experience.
