Amazon Web Services is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to become part of a global engineering team, responsible for the implementation and technical evaluation of our designs and the continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint. This role will be primarily focused on the design and construction of AWS’s High Voltage (HV) and Medium Voltage (MV) substations.

We are looking for engineers with hands on electrical design and field experience. If you can design and operate electrical systems, have an understanding of the critical equipment needs for a substation, and understand the constructability of varying designs you may be a good fit. As we grow we are structuring our team to own more of our engineering in house. In this role, you will work with the Principals and the Senior Global Electrical Engineers to drive the standardization of designs across the global region. You will be responsible for taking designs from concept to permit and construction document set. You will participate in the research and development of new technologies and designs applicable to our products or services.

You will be also responsible for writing technical documentation for such projects. You must be capable of defining critical equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. Engineers will directly support construction and be a part of the process from site selection review through commissioning and ultimately turnover. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in the electrical engineering field. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development.

As an electrical engineer at Amazon you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.

Amazon has a global presence, therefore 30% to 40% travel will be necessary. International support will be part of the job, and some international travel will be necessary. Support could consist of working on international teams and could require developing schematic and design document packages. An understanding of international electrical design requirements is preferable.

Responsibilities of the Principal Electrical Engineer
– Be a leader within the global group as well as within internal and external teams that support our data centers.
– Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable and testable specifications and solutions.
– Design and construction of HV and MV Substations.
– Development of design proposals which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements.
– Collaborate and design with teams or individuals from other disciplines, cultures and countries to create a construction document set.
– Participate in site selection reviews.
– Work with local utilities to understand and define the site utility requirements.
– Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
– Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate electrical equipment.
– Work with local authorities having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with IEC, EU requirements and building codes.
– Review and approval of equipment submittals including vendor Witness Tests.
– Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during research and development projects.
– Work with commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
– Communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with people from a wide range of technical abilities and backgrounds.
– Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, functional test scripts, reports and version release notes.
– Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical Basis of Design (BoD) with constant auditing.
– Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits as needed.
– Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.

– Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
– 10+ years of experience with HV & MV power systems and electrical design.
– Understanding of the European EN & IEC standards.
– Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
– Expertise in the design and construction of Air and Gas Insulated Substations.
– Technical expertise in relay protection schemes, HV & MV circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers, electrical switchgear, grounding and earthing schemes.
– Project management experience.
– Experience mentoring/ training the engineering community on complex technical issues.
– Possess leadership and problem solving skills.

– Master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering.
– 15+ years of relevant design experience.
– Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers.
– Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
– Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects.
– Experience with large-scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms.
– Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.
