Principal Engineer 

The successful candidate will be based in the Cork office and will report to the Technical Director. You will be required to work with the existing team to deliver projects successfully for clients and ByrneLooby in the areas of flood risk management, drainage, potable water treatment and delivery and waste water collection and treatment. Experience in working with local authority clients is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the quality and financial management of projects and must ensure that all projects are delivered in accordance with ByrneLooby policies and procedures on safety, health, environment and quality. You will be required to support business development including preparation of tender submissions.

This role requires the successful Candidate to be eager and able to project manage the delivery of a number of projects for the ByrneLooby Cork Office. The Candidate will be assisted by the project team and will be supported by senior management to deliver projects, particular following appointment.


    • Considerable proven experience in the design and contract administration of large and small-scale projects for public clients.


    • Considerable proven experience in the design and contract administration of flood relief schemes and flood risk assessment.
      Some background in water/wastewater design is desirable, but not essential.


    • Knowledge of the Public Works Contracts and FIDIC.


    • Knowledge of local legislation with respect environmental issues and its application is a considerable a benefit.


    • Experience of Hydraulic Modelling an advantage.


    • Use of GIS software and data management.


    • Strong background in the design management of all aspects of health & safety desired


    • Structured training on a design safety course is preferable


    • Experience in the delivery of all aspects typically included in Stage 1-5 on public works civil engineering projects.




    • Working as member of a project team to deliver quality services to Clients.


    • Flood defence and alleviation design capability (scoping and assessing options).


    • The successful individual must be able to work to tight deadlines within a Quality Management System.


    • Management of projects within time, cost and quality constraints and standards.


    • Champions and promotes professional advice, guidance and support across the business.


    • Monitors and manages compliance and KPI’s.


    • Business development including the preparation of tender submissions.


    • Estimating, pricing and delivering against work targets.




    • Honours degree qualified in Engineering field (QII Level 8 minimum, Level 9 preferred).


    • Al least 8 years post-graduate experience (candidates that demonstrate exceptional ability with less experience may be considered).


    • Chartered status or equivalent qualification.


    • Holders of the post shall hold a full current driver’s licence for Class B vehicles
