20,000 Construction Workers Returning to Work: Approximately 20,000 construction workers are beginning to return to work on residential, early-learning and childcare sites around the country this week as Covid-19 restrictions ease.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage estimates that a phased reopening means an additional 14,000 workers would be returning to sites on top of the estimated 30,000-35,000 currently working.

Since January 8, most construction has been inactive except work on essential health, social housing, housing adaptation grant, critical transport and utility infrastructure, education, certain foreign direct investment related and nearly completed home projects was allowed to continue.

The Construction Industry Federation (CIF), however, says frustration remains that restrictions will persist for the remainder of the sector until May 4 – the date the Government has said it will consider allowing all sites to reopen subject to prevailing health conditions at the time.  According to CIF this is keeping an additional 20,000 construction workers out of work.
